# What does smile arc mean?

Smile arc describes a relationship between two curves when smiling: the edges of the upper front teeth and the lower lip\. Understanding the pair helps explain why a description of the upper curve alone tells only part of that story\.

This explanation draws on Seixas and Câmara's 2021 review and synthesis, rather than a treatment trial\. The full [source, changes and licence credit](<https://smilearcguide.com/about-this-guide#article-credit>) is available in About\.

## Two references, one relationship

The first reference follows the edges of the upper front teeth\. The second follows the lower lip while smiling\. The term concerns how those curves relate to one another, rather than naming only the tooth\-edge curve\.

Reference one

### Upper front\-tooth edges

The upper tooth\-edge curve is also called the upper incisal line\. It describes the curve along those edges\.

Reference two

### Lower lip when smiling

The lower\-lip curve is the other reference in the relationship\. It is part of what the term describes, rather than an optional label added to the upper curve\.

The distinction is between a part and a relationship\. An explanation can describe the upper curve clearly without yet describing how it relates to the lower lip\. Both references matter to the meaning of smile arc\.

Text example

## What if only the tooth curve is described?

In this text example, a proposal illustration is described as changing the curve along the upper front\-tooth edges\. No lower\-lip reference is supplied\.

### What is supplied

A described change in the upper tooth\-edge curve\. This concerns the first reference\.

### What is not supplied

The lower\-lip curve when smiling\. The description does not give the second reference against which the relationship could be understood\.

### What this tells you

The description tells you about a change in the upper tooth\-edge curve\. Smile arc describes how that curve relates to the lower lip when smiling\. Because the example supplies only the upper curve, it describes one part of smile arc; it does not establish the relationship between both curves\.

This example concerns the information given here; it does not tell you what a real clinician considered\. A planning illustration shows an intention, not an achieved result\.

## Understanding can be the next step

You can want an explanation without wanting to change your appearance\. Your own priorities belong in the conversation; a teen can include a chosen supporter without giving up their own questions or preferences\.

If the term appears in your own orthodontic discussion, the clinician can explain the individual findings and intended goal\. The learning here helps distinguish the part being illustrated from the relationship being discussed\. It does not choose an appliance or establish that treatment is needed\.
